The Black Hero
Inspired by reading The Adventures of a Black Coat, Anonymous, 1760. I have used the concertina map screen in the tapestry room at Chawton House Library dated 1746 to show the journey of the black coat through the streets of London. The black coat can be hired for the day by an occasional gentleman to impress. The shop is in Monmouth Street, well known for supplying second hand clothes by merchants. My book is arranged as a concertina book with each journey on a separate concertina page, Some pages are quite short and some are very long dependent on the journey. Every journey starts and finishes in Monmouth Street except the last journey. I visited Monmouth Street in July and there was little sign of this original trade, on the last page of the book I have printed a photograph of how Monmouth Street is today.
